Say What? [prod. Da Beatminerz]

September 30, 2025

One of the most slept-on females on the mic, formerly/formally known as Apani B. Fly Emcee, melts the wax on this classic record, featuring production from her Polyrhythm brethren DJ Spinna and the legendary Beatminerz.

Apani came up in the New York City underground scene during the mid-1990's, her off-kilter flow finding the perfect place in the Polyrhythm Addicts alongside Shabaam Sahdeeq and Mr. Complex. Although the original Polyrhythm line-up including Apani only dropped one EP, Rhyme Related, in 1999, the original Fly Emcee continued sparking the subterranean circuit through guest appearances and dope twelve-inches before dropping her debut album, Story 2 Tell, in 2003.

Having been around the world on tour and in collaboration with hip-hop artists across the continents, such as late-greats MF DOOM and Nujabes, Apani definitely had a lot to say in her most active years.

Over DJ Spinna's spaced-out, bouncy funk, Ms. Magnificent reintroduces us to her dominant flow on 'Abracadabra':
"It's all the same, killin' time
Makin' magic in the basement
'Round the world recording and blacking out stages
Seem like a riddle but it's really quite basic- Apani".

...that's just the chorus.

Da Beatminerz bring back that hardcore boom-bap with knocking drums and triumphant horns on 'Say What (Ni**as)', while Apani blesses the B-Side with self-realization and ghetto consciousness:
"Keep my eyes on the transition
All the bait-and-switchin'
Ni**as still stuck in the same position
Civil rights didn't change the cost of livin'
At night ni**as still commitin' robberies and killin's
We ain't patriots where I'm from
Politicians is still villains".

Both sides of this 12" contain proper instrumentals and acapellas, making this vinyl a must-have for the listeners, DJ's, and producers.

Although it doesn't seem Apani has dropped much new music over the past decade, her impactful discography, whether as part of Polyrhythm Addicts, solo, or a featured artists,  establishes Apani as a goddess among emcee. Her unique style and unparalleled pen game represent the multifaceted skillset required to write a rhyme, record a verse, and rock stages.

Apani B....Fly Emcee for real.
